By Tosin Ola, RN, BSN, MBA-HCM, Founder & President, Sickle Cell Warriors Foundation. A study from Conakry, Guinea, has found hydroxyurea linked to fewer sickle cell crises — welcome evidence from a region where sickle cell disease affects so many families, and where access to treatment is often limited. The study followed 102 patients and adds to a growing body of evidence that hydroxyurea, a well-established oral medicine, can reduce the frequency and severity of painful crises for many people living with sickle cell disease. For our global warrior family, this is more than a statistic. Fewer crises can mean fewer hospital admissions, more days at school and work, and more time with family — the everyday victories that matter most. Access remains the challenge. Hydroxyurea must be available, affordable, and supported with proper monitoring, wherever a warrior lives — in Guinea, in the United States, and around the world. Sickle Cell Warriors Foundation will continue to advocate for access to proven treatments, alongside research into new therapies, so that no warrior is left behind because of where they live. Have you or a loved one used hydroxyurea? What has your experience been? Join the conversation and help other families learn from our shared experiences.
