Mitapivat Decision Due November 1: A Pill, Not a Cure — But a Step Forward

By Tosin Ola, RN, BSN, MBA-HCM, Founder & President, Sickle Cell Warriors Foundation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s decision on mitapivat, a pill for sickle cell disease, is due November 1, 2026. Mitapivat is not a cure. In Phase 3 trials, however, it raised hemoglobin levels — and for people living crisis to crisis, even a meaningful rise in hemoglobin can mean more energy, fewer complications, and a better quality of life. We are watching this decision closely, and we will share what it means for our community as soon as it is announced — in clear, trusted language, without hype. Whatever the decision, our work continues: advocating for safe, effective, and accessible treatments, supporting warriors through treatment choices, and amplifying patient voices in every room where decisions are made. What questions do you have about mitapivat? Send them to our community, and we will work to answer them together.
